Sparrows, juncos, mourning doves, and towhees are just some of the birds that enjoy this seed. It is best scattered on the ground, where these birds naturally forage. A common component of birdseed blends, you may find that a lot of the regulars that come to your feeder push it aside in favor of the sunflower seeds, so if you want to attract birds that prefer millet, buy it separately and use it specifically for them. A word of warning: cowbirds, blackbirds, and other annoying birds like house sparrows also like it, so if you don’t want to attract them, stick to sunflower seeds. Also, millet can sprout beneath the feeder, so if this is a concern, you may want to sterilize the seed before using it. To do this, place one pound of seed in a brown paper bag and cook on high in the microwave for five minutes.
